Our Speakers this year are Nicki Araguz and Barry Haarde!
Nicki Araguz: Having been featured on ABC's 20/20, NBC, CBS, and PBS, Nikki Araguz was the first adolescent to appear on national television in the 1990's to discuss being transgender. Nikki has been advocating for HIV and Transgender awareness since 1995, when she told a nationwide, network audience that she was raped at 13 and infected with HIV. Following the 2010 death of her firefighter husband, Nikki was sued for the death benefits and her marriage was subsequently invalidated by a Texas judge based on her birth as a transgender person. After a half decade long battle the case was overturned on appeal and the Texas Supreme Court denied a further appeal sending the case back to the trial Judge for a historic reversal.
Nikki has taken her struggles and turned them into a triumph for all transgender people assuring the legislative, judicial and procedural changes in all forms of government for the improved lives of all people regardless of their gender identity. Nikki uses her voice and public persona to ensure that all people are treated with equal respect.
At this year's Gay Men's Brunch, Nikki will be speaking on the "next frontier" - the need to end discrimination, stigma and fear of the Transgender community, as demonstrated by the defeat of HERO ordinance. She will also be discussing HIV Stigma in the transgender community.
Barry Haarde: Born with hemophilia in 1965, Barry Haarde is part of a generation of hemophiliacs who contracted HIV and hepatitis C from blood supplies in the 1980s. Barry was one of Ryan White's most vocal supporters when he faced discrimination at his school for simply being an HIV-positive young boy. For the past few years, in order to fight HIV stigma and show the capabilities of people living with HIV, he has orchestrated a cross-country bike ride. Barry rides 2,900 miles across the United States from sea to shining to show people that there are no limits when living with HIV.
